Ashbourne News, 24th December 1915: Thomas went to the front 'over a year ago', and was apparently killed in a bayonet charge. Charles and Thomas also had a brother, Harold, of the 1st Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He had been in the army for five years, seeing service in India, and he had been severely wounded in one hand and the shoulder whilst serving in France. He had also been treated for frost-bite. A further brother, Edward, was in the Derbyshire Yeomanry.
